Porsche…

When I was 15 and getting ready for my driver’s license I really wanted a Porsche 911. I even had a poster of one hanging on my wall. Who would not want one? The price kept me away, With parents going through a divorce and an income from the Detroit Free Press paper route kept me from obtaining my dream car.

The Portland Art Museum had an exposition called Allure of the Automobile. Over the course of the past summer in a nod to the show people who owned sporty or exotic (read really expensive cars) would gather around The Portland Art Museum. The cars lined the streets around the museum. I met my friend Todd and started shooting. Porsches are beautiful cars! They are really photogenic. I did not fin it hard to photograph these beauties.

I was using my Leica M7 which I felt was fitting using a fantastic German camera to photograph beautiful German machines. I shot with Kodak Tri-X 400 film. I really like using this film it has a great range and the grain. It so smooth. Enjoy there are more image of Porches in Motos ‘n’ Autos.

 

My Adventure with my Leica

 

Well it has been a little over a year since I bought my first Leica camera. I bought a Leica M7 with a 50mm Summicron ƒ2.0 lens. Yes a film camear!  I purchased it used on a whim more or less. Buying my camera  was a kind of therapy for me. I was never a Leica fanatic and still do not view myself as one, however I really do like this camera.  I guess that I may have been converted.

Shortly after shooing I start scanning the web for all things Leica. During that searching for all things Leica I found this great site The Online Photographer I have been following it regularly since. I highly recommend this site. It is great, informative, and fun to read!

Well getting back to my year I had gotten away from photographing for myself, for a variety of reasons. Now I did not need a Leica to start shooting again. In my possession were and still are 2 very good and functional cameras a Rolleiflex TLR and and Nikon FM2. Sometimes it makes a huge purchase to jump start your creativity. Really I am glad I did buy this camera. Never having abandoned film and leaving it for dead, I am so happy to have returned to shooting for myself again. I do have to say I was totally blown away by the imagery that was produced by the Leica camera and lens.

Traveling with my Rollei

I was strolling around NE Lombard this past August. This image is from a storefront on NE Interstate in Portland, OR. The day was HOT! I took my Rolleiflex camera. Wow did that camera gather attention. Several people asked me about it. I thought it cool. I was gifted to me by my late grandfather.  I really like the images and the glass is super sharp.

Big Bass Lake in Northern Michigan a scene from the dock at The Cottage.

This photos is of Big Bass Lake in Northern Michigan. My family owns a cottage located in Lake County near Irons, MI. My grandfather bought the property in the ’60s. The story goes as my mother recently told me.

My Grandfather would go Up North during the summer to camp he and a friend would travel from the Metro Detroit area and camp, fish, relax and enjoy the scenery.He would also bring his family. My Grandmother, Uncle, Aunt and my Mother in tow. Finding a camping spot was no trouble for several years. One weekend in 1962 my Grandfather traveled to the area for the weekend and arriving with all the campsites full. Well he was incensed. According to my Mother he felt this was his place. He must have picked up the local news paper and found the listing for the cottage and purchased it on the spot. “Now”, as my Mother said, “He would never have to worry about find a place  to camp again. He never went camping again.”

My family and I visited this past August. Part of the reason for the trip was to have a Memorial for my Grandfather’s passing. Which we did.  I had not been in over 10 years, The Cottage was wonderful and much the same as I had remembered. My Mother and Step Father have made some major improvements to the place. There is a new bathroom, which is now very spacious and no longer does one have the fear of falling through the floor. New windows decorate the place and a new sitting room sits just a few steps away from the cottage. The sitting room has a fireplace and a gorgeous view of the lake. My wife and I really did not want to leave.
